Clinical Hypnotherapy and Coaching
Myth or Fact
Quiz Time:
- Hypnotherapy involves being completely unconscious, you have no idea what is happening to you or going on around you.
Myth – Hypnotherapy is a state of deep relaxation, at no point are you asleep or unconscious (however some clients do benefit from better sleep after a session). You are always completely aware of your surroundings; you hear noises and can come out of relaxation whenever YOU want to or need too.
- Your hypnotherapist has the power to make you cluck like a chicken, bark like a dog, act out whatever they tell you too.
Myth – most people have seen stage hypnotherapy where a hypnotist clicks their fingers and a person is instantly asleep and does ridiculous things to make an audience laugh. Clinical hypnotherapy is not like stage hypnotherapy where things are done to the person. Clinical hypnotherapy is about guiding and supporting a person to achieve their goals, sometimes to overcome challenges. Think of a car journey the client is the driver the hypnotherapist is the navigator that helps the client get where they need to be.
- Hypnotherapy is hocus pocus magic not able to help with real emotional or physical problems.
Myth – Some people are genuinely afraid of hypnotherapy believing it to be a means of controlling a person’s mind and making them do things they don’t want to do. Most people aren’t aware that hypnotherapy has been in existence for centuries and has been used along side tradition medicines to help a range of physical and mental health issues successfully.
- I have to lie down and they wave a pendulum in front of my eyes.
Myth – Some clients enjoy the relaxation element of hypnotherapy and chose to lie down with a pillow/cushion and blanket. This is personal choice other clients prefer to remain seated in a chair upright or recline slightly. THERE IS NO WRONG OR RIGHT WAY to sit or lie-down during a clients session it’s whatever the client feels most comfortable doing.
- Hypnotherapy can work on the subconscious level to change your mind set.
Fact – Hypnotherapy helps the client to completely relax this enables the therapist to talk to client working on the subconscious mind. The therapist is then able to provide therapeutic interventions, make suggestions that help a client change their mind set. This can help support a client working on a range of issues e.g. weight-loss, anxiety, confidence building, reducing or quitting alcohol/smoking.
- I can’t be hypnotised; I don’t believe in that stuff.
Myth – Some people can take sometime to trust and relax with their therapist, once the professional relationship is found, clients can be hypnotised (as I said previously) clients aren’t asleep or unconscious people sometimes believe unless this happens they are not hypnotised this isn’t true. However it is true some clients are more easily hypnotised than others.
- Hypnotherapy is not accredited and regulated like proper therapies.
Clinical Hypnotherapists are regulated and work to achieve accreditation status (although there are some unscrupulous people that practice without training and gaining accredited status.) Clinical Hypnotherapists are registered with the General Hypnotherapy Council and MUST pass both practical and theoretical exams. This registration is renewed yearly and strict guidance and continued evidence of continued CPD must provided to enable a therapist to continue practicing legally.
- Coaching is for business-people and athletes.
Fact and Myth – Coaches do work with people in business and athletes to improve their success rates. Coaching can also be used to help clients change their mind-set and teach a range of strategies and techniques to help with a range of physical and emotional issues.
- Coaching is the same as counselling you look back and focus on the past to sort your problems out.
Myth and Fact- Both hypnotherapy and coaching unlike counselling start from where you are today and don’t focus therapy on past issues. The aim is to help the client see a better future and enables them to become the best version of themselves. Hypnotherapy can be used to take a client back to certain event and changes the way they see it. If the event is preventing the client moving forward.
- Your coach tells you what to do and gives you a strict programme to follow.
Myth – Hypnotherapy and coaching is about helping you to make the changes you need, not making them for you. Hypnotherapist will work with you helping you to achieve your goals, they provide advice and guidance for the client to follow, but there are no diet sheets or exercise programmes to stick too.
- Hypnotherapy and coaching and cure you of pain and illness.
Myth – Hypnotherapy and coaching can enable a client to use a range of techniques and strategies to help reduce pain, anxiety, stress. However, hypnotherapy cannot cure illness or pain. Hypnotherapy and coaching are complementary and alternative medicines that can provide relief but should never be used in place of medical advice for serious health conditions, without the guidance of a medical professional.
- Hypnotherapy is very expensive and takes a long time.
Myth – Some clients may only need 1-2 sessions to help them over come an issue, others will need longer programme of sessions. The length of the therapy is tailored to each clients needs. Sessions may seem expensive at first glance, but the long-term changes clients achieve can be priceless. There are a range of packages and programmes available and payment schemes available for all clients.
